Tucked away in central Portugal, the walled town of Óbidos is a medieval treasure waiting to be unearthed by first-timers. Getting There: Flight Information


Flights from the west are connected to direct flights to Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport via Toronto and Montreal offer great starting points for your adventure to Portugal. Numerous direct flights from Toronto and Montreal to Lisbon take about 8 hours. Once you arrive in Lisbon, Óbidos is a about an 1-hour 10-minute bus ride away (approximately 85 km from the airport).

In Obidos, consider getting a car rental, which allows you to go at your own pace, stop whenever you wish, for as long as you want. Stop-at-will and explore surrounding areas like the picturesque coastal town of Nazaré, known for its astonishing waves and accompanying surfer culture, or the historic town of Alcobaça, famous for its 12th-century Alcobaca Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you'd rather sit back and relax though, frequent bus services run from Lisbon to Óbidos, taking around one hour when you can kick off your shoes and enjoy the passing glimpses of the area's charming countryside.


Ground Transportation


Once in Óbidos, transportation options are convenient and comfortable. Renting a car is recommended for those who want to discover surrounding gems at their own pace, such as the charming fishing village of Peniche, just 25 km away.


For those who prefer public transport, local buses are reliable and budget-friendly. The one-hour bus ride from Lisbon to Óbidos gives you glimpses of the idyllic countryside, making it a delightful part of your journey.


Local Historic Sites


Óbidos is filled with stunning historic sites. The crown jewel is Óbidos Castle, built in the 12th century. Walking along its walls gives you sprawling views of the town and the surrounding landscapes. Considered one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Portugal.


Another highlight is the Church of Santa Maria, renowned for its striking blue and white tiles and beautiful altarpiece. A must-try local specialty is the cherry liqueur, Ginjinha, often served in an edible chocolate cup. Visit Pestana Pousada do Castelo to enjoy this delightful treat while savoring views of the castle.
